It’s been more than 12 years since a New Jersey athlete made a serious attempt to break the state record in the women’s 100 meters.
But on Friday, not only was the record attempted, it was broken by two sprinters from the same team!!!!
In what may well be one of the greatest feats in New Jersey history, New Jersey junior Ryan Jennings and Timber Creek senior Nayla Jones lit up the track at the South Jersey Group 3 Championships in Delsea, recording two of the fastest 100-meter times in state history.
Jennings finished with 11.33 seconds and Jennings with 11.38 seconds, a +1.9 mph wind speed, breaking the state record of 11.42 seconds set by Willingboro legend Michelle Glover in 1981 at the TAC Junior Nationals at UCLA.
Prior to Friday, the closest anyone had come to Glover’s 11.42 seconds was in 2012 when Paramus Catholic’s Myasia Jacobs ran 11.44 seconds (+0.7 wind) as a sophomore to take second place at the 2010 New Balance Nationals.
Jones had run an 11.45 (+.05) and Jennings an 11.47 (+1.1) in the preliminaries before a surprising 1-2 finish in the final. With times of 11.33 and 11.38, Jennings was fifth in the U.S. this season and Jones sixth.
Jennings’ wind-free time has elevated her to second in the U.S. junior rankings this season, trailing only the 11.26 seconds set earlier this month by Dana Wilson of Greensboro Day School in Greensboro, North Carolina.
That’s not all!
Earlier in the meet, Jennings and Jones teamed with Billy Frazier and Samiyah Puckett to win the 4x100m in 46.19 seconds, the fifth fastest time in New Jersey history and the fastest time at any state meet!!!!
The Jennings & Jones Express will be back on the track tomorrow with the 200. How low can they go???!!!
