Eyrum Tok case postponed to July 1
Timur Cihantimur remains in detention
Timur Cihantimur, who was on trial along with his mother in the same case, was given further detention at hearings held on June 18 and 21.
The court has yet to rule on the request made by Timur CihanTimur, also a US citizen, for his lawyers to be tried without detention in exchange for bail. In court filings, Timur CihanTimur’s lawyers argued that the detention center where Timur CihanTimur was staying was a prison, not a detention center for children, and that CihanTimur’s needs for medication and medical intervention were not met and he was abused. They demanded that he should receive medical treatment and be released on bail or be placed under house arrest. It is not yet clear when Timur CihanTimur will appear before a judge again.
What happened? Timur Cihantimur was driving a luxury car when the car broke down and crashed into three ATV-type vehicles parked on the side of the road, killing 29-year-old Oguz Murat Asi and injuring several others. The accident occurred around 11:50 p.m. on March 1 in the Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul. After the accident, Timur Cihantimur, an unlicensed driver, was kidnapped by his mother, Eylem Tok, first to Egypt and then to the United States. The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office, which began investigating the case, issued an arrest warrant for “protection” for the mother, Eylem Tok, who was found to have flown from Istanbul to Egypt around 3:50 a.m. on March 2. It requested the issuance of a red notice for Timur Cihantimur for “reckless killing.” Turkiye requested the extradition of the mother and child to the United States in May. Timur Cihantimur and Ayrem Tok were arrested on Friday, June 14, in a police operation in Boston, USA.
