Our national team started the European Championship with a first win, beating Georgia in the opening match of Group F, giving our country hope on the way to the round of 16, but the defeat of Portugal put the calculations in our heads. It came down to the last match. If the Crescent Stars had beaten Portugal, they would have been guaranteed to finish at the top of the group. Now, the match against the Czech Republic will decide everything. As we know, the 12 countries that placed in the top two of the six groups will advance to the next round. The top four countries that placed in the top three will be the other teams that will buy tickets for the remaining 16 rounds.
How will Turkiye, their EURO 2024 opponent, get out of the group?
If our national team beats the Czech Republic on Wednesday, we could be top of the table again depending on the result of Portugal vs Georgia. In this case, we will face one of the best players from the third place in Group A, B or C. This means a big advantage for the quarterfinals. At the moment, this seems unlikely, but a draw with the Czech Republic would be enough for second place. If we finish second in the group, we will face the Netherlands, who are the leaders of Group D. However, if the result against the Czech Republic puts us in the top four of the third place, we will face the leader of Group B or Group C. This means that we will face one of the two teams that are the favorites to win the tournament, Spain and England, according to the current table.
EURO 2024: Leadership is the goal!
It might also be to our advantage that our final game is against the Czech Republic. We played them before in 2008 and again in 2016 in the final group game. We won 3-2 in an unforgettable match at EURO 2008 and progressed to the next round. We were the team that beat them 2-0 at EURO 2016. But this win wasn’t enough to get us out of the group. Given Portugal’s poor result, our hope is to beat the Czech Republic again on Wednesday and finish top of the group.
