The fire caused occasional explosions and the wind spread the fire to some neighboring factories and forested areas. Most of the factory where the fire first started was rendered unusable, but only employees were allowed to approach the burning area due to the risk of explosion.

The first statement made by the Istanbul Governor on the matter said that the fire broke out in an industrial area on Deli Sanay Yolu Street in the Tuzla Aydınlu district, and that “a large number of firefighting units and AFAD Chemical, Biological and Radioactive have been deployed.” Nuclear threat teams have been dispatched to the area to extinguish the fire, while “necessary precautions are being taken to prevent the fire from spreading to forested areas. According to initial investigation results, there have been no fatalities or deaths. Information on the injuries and development of the fire will be shared by the Governor.”

Governor Gul said the fire broke out at about 12:50 p.m. at a factory in the industrial area and had spread to some nearby blocks.
Gül said all agencies and organizations intervened in a timely manner and fought hard to prevent the fire from spreading to other factories and forests, saying, “As you can see, the wind is too strong. There is intervention from the air and land.” Hopefully, in the coming hours the course of the fire will become clearer. “For now, there is nothing to fear, but the fire is not yet extinguished. All agencies are working together here,” he said. “We have their means,” he said.

Responding to reporters’ questions, Gul said the factory where the fire broke out was operational but it was unclear how many employees were inside, adding, “There was no loss of life and no injuries. The fire brigade’s report states that the cause of the fire, its justification and similar technical details will be revealed in future,” he said.

Factory workers spoke about the fire
Ergun Mutlu, who works in a factory next to where the fire first broke out, said he saw smoke and immediately called the fire brigade, who said a violent explosion occurred within five minutes.

Mutlu said fire engines arrived within five to 10 minutes, adding: “Because of the strong winds, the fire razed the factory within 10 minutes. There were batteries and other things in the factory at the time,” he said.

Mutlu said he helped workers inside get out and that there had been a partial fire in the same location two years ago and they had put it out using their own means, but this time the winds were very strong.
