HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Good news for Hagerstown: A new food market is opening in a downtown area where it’s hard to find healthy or nutritious food options.
The project will be welcomed in areas with limited access to full-fledged supermarkets.

Funded by the state of Maryland and private foundations, the project is eagerly anticipated by many in the community.
“There’s not much in this neighborhood,” Jessica Scott said. “There are convenience stores where you can get soda, chips and candy, but fresh groceries? You have to go outside of this community.”
“Fresh fruits and vegetables that are easily accessible by car for most of us who live outside of the city will now be readily available in the neighborhood,” said Horizon Goodwill CEO David Schuster.
Hagerstown’s mayor believes the project will bring positive change to the city.
“We have a grocery store opening in a food-challenged area of a historically Black community, and that’s a wonderful thing,” Mayor Tekesha Martinez said.

For Brooke Grossman, Horizon Goodwill’s chief mission officer, the new market won’t just be limited to N. Prospect Street and the surrounding area.
“This isn’t just for people who don’t have access to food,” Grossman said, “This is a resource for anyone who lives in the city. I live in the city, and I don’t want to have to travel far to the grocery store!”
The new market will open early next year.
