This four-hour cinematic documentary, airing in two-hour installments tonight and tomorrow night, focuses on America’s involvement in World War I during the critical year of 1918. It weaves together the stories of Gen. John J. Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Forces; Michael B. Ellis, a young man fighting with the Army’s soon-to-be-legendary 1st Infantry Division; and a brave group of African American soldiers who became known as the Harlem Hellfighters to tell a larger, more complex tale of how the United States joined World War I as an underdog and came out the leader of the 20th century.

All day today, MOVIES! and Turner Classic Movies spotlight war- and military-themed movies in honor of the Memorial Day holiday. MOVIES! kicks off first and features eight titles, a mix of dramas and comedies (and comedy/dramas). The lineup includes The Sand Pebbles (1966), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), Mister Roberts (1955), The Wackiest Ship in the Army (1960), The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964), Von Ryan’s Express (1965), None but the Brave (1965) and Twelve O’Clock High (1949). TCM’s Memorial Day marathon, which has been going since Friday night, continues today with the documentary Appointment in Tokyo (1945), followed by The McConnell Story (1955), War Nurse (1930), Cry ‘Havoc’ (1944), Bataan (1943), The Rack (1956) and Darby’s Rangers (1958). In primetime, TCM’s Memorial Day lineup will cross over with the final installment of its monthlong Monday celebration of famed Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa and feature two of the star’s later films, both set during World War II: Three Came Home (1950) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which Hayakawa received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role as Col. Saito. Following these titles, TCM’s marathon concludes with Assignment in Brittany (1943) and Sergeant York (1941).

The series explores the accusations of sexual assault made against Nick by three women, while also looking at Aaron’s battles with mental health issues and substance abuse — and the rift that occurred after Aaron decided to support his brother’s accusers.
Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted

This cinematic documentary that focuses on America’s involvement in World War I during the critical year of 1918 concludes with tonight’s two-hour installment, “Over the Top.” After Germany makes an all-out push to take Paris, lead American Gen. Pershing is forced to make hard decisions that will either break the Allies or turn the tide of war. During the infamous Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Pershing lays out one of the most ambitious battle plans ever attempted. To the surprise of many, the U.S. military and key regiments known as the Big Red One and the Harlem Hellfighters help pave the way to a hard-fought victory.

Jason and the Argonauts

Catch a Classic!
Legendary stop-motion special effects master Ray Harryhausen achieved what is probably his greatest triumph in terms of bringing the fantastical to thrilling life in this 1963 feature based on the ancient Greek tale about the hero Jason (Todd Armstrong), who leads the men of his ship the Argo in a quest to find the fabled Golden Fleece. The human characters and actors here are fairly “meh”; the gods, played by actors like Niall MacGinnis as Zeus and Honor Blackman as Hera, are more interesting and fun. But the real stars of the film are the various Harryhausen-created monsters that Jason and crew encounter and battle along the way in a series of spectacular set pieces that are still pretty thrilling to watch today. There are harpies; the multi-headed Hydra that guards the Fleece; Talos, the enormous, sword-wielding bronze statue that springs to life to pursue the men; and, of course, the iconic skeleton army, born from the teeth of the slain Hydra, that fights the Argonauts in an amazing, climactic battle that took Harryhausen and his team four months of painstaking attention to detail to pull off. All of the fantasy action is set to a rousing musical score by Bernard Herrmann.

Turner Classic Movies concludes its monthlong, Wednesday night spotlight on famous films with one-name titles using the name of a primary character. Tonight’s final lineup features five titles, beginning with Best Director Oscar nominee Billy Wilder’s romantic comedy/drama Sabrina (1954), led by Best Actress nominee Audrey Hepburn as Sabrina Fairchild, alongside Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. Greta Garbo earned Best Actress nominations as the title character in each of the next two films: as Nina Ivanovna Yakushova (nicknamed “Ninotchka”) in the romantic comedy Ninotchka (1939) and as Marguerite Gautier (nicknamed “Camille”) in the romantic drama Camille (1936). The classic newsroom-set 1928 Broadway comedy The Front Page has been remade directly, or inspired similar stories, for the movie screen a number of times since the curtain raised on its first performance. Turner Classic Movies is airing all of those film adaptations this evening. First is The Front Page (1974), the second production specifically remaking the stage story basically as it was. Billy Wilder cowrote (with I.A.L. Diamond) and directed the film, which is led by Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Susan Sarandon. Following that is the first direct adaptation, 1931’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Front Page, directed by Best Director nominee Lewis Milestone, and starring Best Actor nominee Adolphe Menjou, Pat O’Brien and Mary Brian. Next is the screwball comedy classic His Girl Friday (1940), which adds a romantic element and a gender-switch to the tale. Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy lead the cast of director Howard Hawks’ film. Finally, Switching Channels (1988), making its TCM premiere, remakes both the 1931 Front Page and His Girl Friday, while switching its setting from a newspaper office to a TV newsroom. Kathleen Turner, Burt Reynolds and Christopher Reeve star.

Acting icon Billy Dee Williams, still cool as ever at age 87, drops by Turner Classic Movies tonight to introduce a couple of his favorite films. First up is The Public Enemy, the legendary 1931 gangster movie that established James Cagney as a star (and led to his frequent association with that kind of role even to this day). The second of Williams’ picks is one featuring the actor in one of his most famous roles: the 1971 TV movie Brian’s Song, based on the real-life friendship between cancer-stricken Chicago Bears player Brian Piccolo (James Caan) and his teammate, Gale Sayers (Williams). Both Williams and Caan received Emmy nominations for their performances. Following that are two other Williams-led films, both making their TCM premieres. First, the sports comedy The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976) follows a team of ex-Negro League baseball stars in the late 1930s who leave their teams and travel the Midwest as free agent players. Williams leads the cast as Bingo Long, with costars including James Earl Jones and Richard Pryor. Then, in the 1977 biopic Scott Joplin, Williams portrays the iconic ragtime composer and pianist of the title. The cast also includes Clifton Davis, Margaret Avery, Godfrey Cambridge and Art Carney. Eubie Blake, another famed composer/pianist and a contemporary of Joplin’s, has a cameo appearance as a piano contest judge.

It’s amazing it’s taken this long to tell the full narrative of Nicole Brown Simpson, but her story has found the perfect home with Lifetime, a network devoted to helping stop violence against women. The project has been in the works for quite some time and is pegged to the 30-year anniversary month of her death (Nicole Brown died on June 12, 1994). More than 50 participants — including her sisters, close family and friends — are taking part in the docuseries, which includes exclusive archival video and unprecedented family access. “We are here to vindicate her. Don’t get in our way,” says one woman in the documentary.

Tonight, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by actor/filmmaker Ethan Hawke, who introduces two films of his choosing. Hawke will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and his own personal reflections on them. The titles he has chosen are the Oscar-nominated Western The Gunfighter (1950), starring Gregory Peck, Helen Westcott and Karl Malden, and Gun Crazy (1950), a crime film noir led by Peggy Cummins and John Dall.
