New three-year agreement extends ongoing partnership to a total of seven years
LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Herbalife, the leading health and wellness company, community and platform, along with the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF), announced it has renewed its partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP USA), the U.S.-based nonprofit organization that supports the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger around the world.
Committed to supporting emergency food assistance and addressing food insecurity around the world, this three-year, $1 million partnership expansion will support a women-led economic empowerment project in Colombia that aims to strengthen sustainable communities through economic independence, food security and equity.
“For 43 years, improving the health and well-being of communities has driven everything we do at Herbalife,” said Michael Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Herbalife. “Partnering with the U.S. World Food Programme to support women-led agribusiness efforts in Colombia is an important step toward alleviating hunger in the country, while also protecting and enhancing the environment’s natural resources.”
Empowering women leaders and smallholder farmers, who produce 35 percent of the world’s food, is essential for sustainable food systems and global food security. Despite performing 70 percent of agricultural labor, women have limited access to and control over land and resources. WFP estimates that closing this gap could help feed 45 million people.
In Colombia, WFP is working to improve the income generation and agricultural production capacity of small rural women farmers, while supporting them to actively participate in local decision-making. Focusing on vulnerable rural areas, WFP provides support through education, skills, livelihood training and financial literacy. As part of this effort, WFP has provided support and training to 6,000 people and helped them bring 10 hectares of land into cultivation.
“We look forward to our continued partnership with Herbalife to help make an even greater impact on the lives of smallholder farmers in the years to come. Our work would not be possible without the dedicated support of partners like Herbalife,” said Baron Seger, president and CEO of the World Food Programme USA.
The partnership between Herbalife, HFF and the World Food Programme USA began in 2018 and has supported emergency relief programs, provided the equivalent of approximately 2.1 million meals, and supported relief efforts around the world in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters in Guatemala and the Philippines. In 2020, WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work to fight hunger, promote peace in conflict zones, and prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.
“Changing people’s lives is a core tenet of our Herbalife values and is the impact we hope to drive through our work with the Herbalife Family Foundation,” said Mary Holloway, Herbalife Family Foundation trustee and member of the Herbalife Chairman’s Club. “Supporting programs that open the door to unexpected opportunities can profoundly change people’s lives in ways beyond our imagination.”
