Burak Kayacan (36), a father of four who lives in Adana, responded by phone to his aunt, who feared an earthquake, because he had not received the 300,000 lira payment for the prefabricated house he built a year and a half ago. His brother-in-law, Kemal Aktaşlu (59), beat and shot Kayacan, who had come to his house with his son, nephew and three others. Kayacan’s mother-in-law, Fadime Yıldız (66), said, “When I went out to the courtyard, I found Burak lying on his back on the ground. I called him ‘Burak’ and picked him up, but he died. He did good and received evil in return. How can they take responsibility for Sabi’s children? “They beat my grandchildren and burned us,” he said. Police detained the six suspects during an investigation carried out at their address.
The incident occurred on July 1 at around 18:00 on Topalak Street in Dertlar district of Çukurova district. Burak Kayacan, a father of four who works as a welder and kebab maker, built a prefabricated house on the land opposite his house for his aunt, Hulya Aktaşli, who was afraid of an earthquake. Until now, Kayacan had not received the 300,000 lira fee from his uncle, Kemal Aktaşli (59).
A crowd storms the house and a gunfight breaks out between them.
When Kayacan called and asked for money, her aunt replied, “We won’t pay you, this is our house.” Burak Kayacan then retorted, “We’ll destroy this house, it’s of no use to us.” The next day, his brother-in-law, Kemal Aktaşlı, left Gaziantep and came to Kayacan’s house with his son Emre Khan Aktaşlı (27), nephew Akın Aktaşlı (26) and three acquaintances. Aktaşlı and his entourage entered the garden yelling abuse, punched Burak Kayacan and opened fire with a gun. Kayacan fought back with a hunting rifle he had taken from the house to protect himself. During the conflict, Kemal Aktaşlı was shot in the leg, Kayacan was shot in the chest and abdomen, and his brother-in-law, Mahmut Demir (46), was also wounded in the leg. The suspects fled in a car while Kayakan collapsed, bleeding.
The suspect was caught in the operation.
With the help of those around him, Burak Kayacan was taken by car to Çukurova State Hospital, but despite every attempt by doctors he could not be saved and his brother-in-law, Mahmut Demir, was given treatment there.
A team from the Homicide Department began operations to arrest the suspects. At the same time, six suspects whose hiding places were searched were arrested. Kemal Aktaşli escaped injury and was taken to a private hospital for treatment. Burak Kayacan’s body, which was taken to the Adana Forensic Institute after an autopsy, was buried by his family at Kabasakal Cemetery.
“There were children in the house.”
Fadime Yıldız, the grieving mother-in-law of Burak Kayacan, said: “He built a house on my aunt’s land. A year and a half passed, but they didn’t pay him and kept him busy. So I consulted his aunt to find a compromise. He told me on the phone, ‘Please let Kemal come and talk to my uncle.’ “I guess he is starving to death,” he said. On the day of the incident, I went to pray in that room. When I went outside, Kemal kicked the door and came in. I looked around and saw that they were surrounding the house. Kemal screamed, and Burak ran into the courtyard. Then they started shooting with their guns. I saw Emre shoot Burak. His nephew shot my other son-in-law in the leg. There were children in the house too, and they screamed, ‘Lie down, we’ll kill you all.’ “Then they ran away,” he said.
“I had it in my hand, and he was dead.”
Explaining that his son-in-law died in his arms, Yıldız said, “I went out to the courtyard and found Burak lying face up on the ground. I called him ‘Burak’ and picked him up, but he was dead. He did good and received evil in return. May God carry them out as He knows how. How will they take responsibility for Sabi’s children? They beat my grandchildren and burned us. You can’t shoot animals, so how can you kill them? “The heat this summer has burned us,” he said, crying.
According to reports, the processing of those detained – Emre Khan Aktasur, his cousin Akun Aktasur, Ali Timoshin (28), Mehmet Taha Alyanak (22) and Sebahattin Gökçe (22) – was continuing at the police station, while treatment for the injured Kemal Aktasur was continuing.
