Technological innovations have come a long way since the first research into hair rejuvenation, at least since ancient Egyptian physicians applied black lizard oil to bald scalps in 1550 BCE. In the mid-1950s, a young dermatologist, Norman Orentreich, pioneered a simple experiment in transplanting hair from dense areas of the head back to the hairline. The transplanted hair regrows in the previously barren areas, and a multi-billion dollar global hair transplant industry has existed ever since, providing permanent and semi-permanent solutions to receding hairlines, thinning hair and miniaturizing hair follicles.

Hair restoration treatments performed by board-certified physicians in the U.S. are on the higher end of the aesthetic pricing scale, but Los Angeles-area doctors who can afford to spend $10,000 to $20,000 for a treatment often offer the same referrals, says John Kahen, lead hair surgeon and founder of Beverly Hills Hair Restoration.
I spoke to seven performers and celebrities who have sought hair restoration treatments, including some from Cahen’s Beverly Hills Hair Restoration Clinic: Former and current NFL star, professional dancer and performer Corey O’Brien, and plastic surgery enthusiast and reality TV star Justin Jedlica, all said they felt their confidence improved with the Smart PRP procedure.
When asked why savvy patients choose Kahen as their doctor, they respond that it’s because of the minimal downtime. While many doctors use platelet-rich plasma for hair regrowth, Kahen’s clinic was granted a patent last month for Smart PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma). This unique treatment suggests a more proactive healing solution to hair regrowth surgery. Unlike traditional transplant procedures, Smart PRP uses the body’s own tissue to stimulate fresh hair follicles, resulting in a higher survival rate for hair follicle transplants.
Over the past five years, alopecia patients have turned to newer alternative therapies such as PRP for treatment. While the commonalities of alopecia range from common to rare, the typical patient seeks to regain their once full hairline and sides. For example, androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as female pattern baldness, is a common hair loss condition caused by genetic and hormonal factors. PRP, which is injected subcutaneously or intradermally into the affected scalp area, is one of many new techniques that have proven effective in treating patients with AGA.

But unlike other hair restoration experts, Kahen takes his treatments a step further, applying new techniques to conventional restoration procedures to ensure the best of both worlds.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 80 million Americans currently suffer from hair loss. This is a deeply personal issue, and Kahen understands it deeply. Mr. Kahen looked for a way to treat his personal troubles. “When I graduated from medical school and was undergoing surgical training, I started experiencing alopecia myself. After having my own hair transplant surgery, I felt like I immediately regained my confidence and realized that alopecia is common. I wanted to help people who suffer from alopecia because it is a condition,” Kahen explains.
What exactly is hair miniaturization?
“Hair loss begins with the shrinking of the hair follicle,” Kahen explained when asked why hair thins with age. A common misconception among people with alopecia is that their hair is thinning, but in fact it’s the hair follicles themselves that shrink, which gives the appearance of thinning hair. “Hair follicles get smaller over time. You first notice the diameter of the hair follicle getting smaller, and then the hair gets thinner before it eventually falls out.”
What is Smart PRP?
Inpatient treatment takes 30 minutes and there is no downtime upon completion of treatment. But what exactly is it? “Smart PRP therapy uses your body’s tissues to stimulate new hair follicles. It promotes hair’s natural color and density, while also helping to improve surgical scars and make the healing process look more natural.” Therefore, many people find this treatment innovative.

However, hair restoration therapy is not limited to the scalp, head, hairline, or gender. As of 2021, the hair loss industry has seen a significant increase in eyebrow transplants and rejuvenation. Kahen assures that his treatment and newly patented method will also work for eyebrow hair, a common desire among women, but anyone can be a candidate. “SmartPRP can be used in eyebrow surgery to stimulate growth in areas with hair loss. This will be a quicker process because the hair in this area is not as dense.”
According to market research, the global hair regrowth market size in 2022 was valued at $17.75 billion and is projected to reach $53.17 billion by 2028. Search for “hair transplant surgery” on TikTok and you’ll see more than 810 million views. Social media continues to fuel consumers’ desire to save money on surgical tourism to beauty hotspots such as Brazil, South Korea, and especially Turkey when it comes to hair regrowth. Although treatments can be seduced and promoted through social media platforms and 60-second clips on TikTok, Kahen urges prospective patients to always seek treatment from certified professionals.
