IRON MOUNTAIN — Blends-The Green Spot, a juice and smoothie shop in downtown Iron Mountain, has opened in a new location and has rebranded as The Green Spot Cafe.
The new cafe offers a full breakfast and lunch menu, something the previous location didn’t offer.
The new location at 302 S. Stephenson Ave., formerly Paws & Claws Pet Grooming, was on the table when owner Marilyn Fisher was looking to open Blends in 2021, but things didn’t work out at the time. Blends eventually moved to 415 Stephenson Building.
Fisher, who owns Green Spot Café with her son, Dave, and daughter-in-law, Yvonne Slattery, has a long history as an interior designer and restaurateur. She and her husband, Jay David Fisher, opened their first restaurant in California in 1976. They subsequently operated restaurants throughout California, as well as in Idaho and Nevada. After her husband’s death, Fisher moved to the area from Reno, Nevada, to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law, but soon realized she wanted to return to the restaurant business.
Fate changed when the landlord at 415 Stevenson purchased the former pet grooming store where Fisher had originally wanted to work and asked if she wanted to relocate there.
Renovations of the new location began immediately and have been ongoing for several months. The building has been completely redone and is unrecognizable from the previous one. Fischer says it was a huge task to fit in all the kitchen equipment. The cafe is small but cozy, with plenty of seating.
The Green Spot Cafe opened in April and has been well-received by customers, old and new. Fisher said he’s even seen guests staying at the new TownePlace Suites next door looking for a late breakfast.
“People love us. In fact, they love our breakfast,” Fisher said. “We care about what we do, and when you care, it shows. People love what we do.”
Fisher describes the food at Green Spot Café as “healthy, but not health food.” Great care has been taken in choosing ingredients, and nothing is fried or cooked in oil.
All smoothies are gluten-free and dairy-free, and there are several vegetarian options available.
“When we say it’s healthy, people think it’s not healthy,” Fisher said. “That’s not true. When we do specials, we also offer meat, ham, chicken, bacon. So we’re not holding back on anything, but we are the healthier option.”
Breakfast is served until 11am on weekdays and all day on Saturdays, and menu items include farm fresh egg scrambles, Asian vegetable stir fry, New Orleans custard French toast, and the popular eggs Benedict.
Lunch options include soups and salads, such as garden salad, Caesar salad, and specialty salads, and sandwiches on the menu include ham, turkey, and fresh garden stacks.
The deli case is often stocked with quiches, frittatas, lasagna, salads, desserts, and more.
Green Spot Cafe also offers takeaway, baked gluten-free pizzas made with cauliflower crust.
Additionally, Fisher packages and sells his own spice blends, many of which are used on the menu.
Green Spot Cafe is located at 302 S. Stephenson Ave. in Iron Mountain and is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
