At the 2024 European Football Championship (EURO 2024), France advanced to the semi-finals after beating Portugal 5-3 in a penalty shootout after both regular and extra time ended in a 0-0 draw.
In the first half of the quarter-finals, both teams struggled to find their positions and the match ended scoreless.
Portugal looked on the brink in the 63rd minute. Leo picked up the ball on the left wing and passed it to Vicinha in the penalty area, whose shot was somehow cleared by Mainhan. Ronaldo tried to finish the ball in the box, but Maninan again denied him.
France came close to scoring in the 66th minute, when Kolo Muani’s shot from an open position in the penalty area deflected off Diaz’s foot and into a corner near the post.
After 90 minutes of regular play and extra time, the match ended in a 0-0 draw, and the match went to a penalty shootout.
For France, Dembele, Fofana, Koundé, Barkola and Hernandez all scored penalty kicks.
For Portugal, Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva and Mendes all put the ball into the net in the shootout, but Felix was unable to benefit from a shot.
France beat Spain 5-3 in the penalty shootout to advance to the semi-finals, where they will face Spain in the finals, which will be played on July 9 in Munich, Germany.
