1914 – Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates becomes the first player in modern baseball to reach 3,000 hits.

1934 – Olin Dutra wins the U.S. Open by defeating Gene Sarazen by one stroke.

1946 – Joe Louis knocks out Billy Cone in eight rounds to win the heavyweight boxing title.
1973 – Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, wins the Belmont Stakes in record time to complete the Triple Crown. Secretariat sets a world record for the 1.5-mile course with a time of 2 minutes, 24 seconds and sets the record for the largest margin of victory in the Belmont Stakes, by 31 lengths.
1978 – Larry Holmes wins the WBC heavyweight title by a 15-round split decision over Ken Norton in New York.
1979 – Coastal, ridden by Ruben Hernandez, beat Golden Act by 3 1/4 lengths to deny Spectacular Bid the Triple Crown. Spectacular Bid finished third.
1984 – Swale, ridden by Lafitte Pincay, wins the Belmont Stakes by four lengths over Pine Circle. Swale dies eight days later.
1984 — French Open Women’s Tennis: Martina Navratilova defeats Chris Evert 6-3, 6-1, becoming the second woman in the Open Era to win four Grand Slam titles simultaneously.
1985 – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scores 29 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 111-100 victory over the Boston Celtics to win the NBA title in six games.
1990 – Monica Seles saved four set points in the first-set tiebreak to defeat two-time champion Steffi Graf 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to become the youngest French Open champion. Seles was 16 years and 6 months old.
1991 – In the first French Open men’s singles final since 1954, Jim Courier defeats Andre Agassi 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win his first Grand Slam title.
1993 – Patrick Roy made 18 saves and the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in Game 5 to win their 24th Stanley Cup.
2001 — Stanley Cup Final, Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado: The Colorado Avalanche defeat the defending champion New Jersey Devils, 3-1, to win the series, 4-3. The Avalanche win their second championship.
2001 – Jennifer Capriati defeats Kim Clijsters 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 to win the French Open, achieving her second consecutive Grand Slam title.
2003 – The New Jersey Devils end the Anaheim Mighty Ducks’ surreal season with a 3-0 victory to win the Stanley Cup. Mike Rupp, who had never appeared in the playoffs until Game 4, scored the first goal and assisted on two goals by Jeff Friesen.
2007 – Ridden by jockey John Velazquez, the filly Rags to Riches beat Curlin in a breathtaking straight-line run to win the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first filly in more than a century to win the final leg of the Triple Crown.
2008 – Ken Griffey Jr. becomes the sixth player in baseball history to hit 600 career home runs, hitting a home run off Mark Hendrickson in the top of the first inning of the Cincinnati Reds’ 9–4 win over the Florida Marlins.
2010 – Chicago’s Patrick Kane slips past Michael Leighton to steal the puck with 4 minutes and 10 seconds left in overtime, stunning Philadelphia and leading the Blackhawks to a 4-3 overtime victory in Game 6 to win their first Stanley Cup since 1961.
2013 – Rafael Nadal becomes the first man to win eight Grand Slam titles, beating fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in the French Open final.
2015 – Chris Heston of the San Francisco Giants pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 victory over the New York Mets.
2018 – Justify, ridden by Mike Smith, wins the Belmont Stakes, becoming the 13th Triple Crown winner.
2019 — French Open Men’s Tennis: Rafael Nadal defeats Austria’s Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 to win his third consecutive French singles title, his 12th overall, the first player to win 12 singles titles at the same Grand Slam, and his 18th major title.
2022 — The controversial Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series kicks off at Centurion Club in Hertfordshire. The PGA suspends 17 players.
