The U of A Food Science College Bowl team won the IFTSA regional title with wins over Louisiana State University and Texas A&M, and defeated Texas A&M again in the finals to advance to the national tournament.
A student majoring in food science recently won first place at the Food Technologists Association Student Association College Bowl South Central competition held in Louisiana.
The IFTSA South Central Regional Championship qualifies the U of A’s Food Science College Bowl team for the national competition at the IFT Annual Expo in Chicago in July.
The team is comprised of food science students from the Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences. The members are team captain Bernie Pontes Guimarães, Chetanjot Romana, Andrew Maust, Amanda Stuber, and Kason Frisbie.
The group is led by instructor Morgan Denser, who is also the Food Science Club advisor and teaches Introduction to Food Science and Product Innovation in the Food Scientists class.
“We have been training since last semester, spending at least an hour a week getting familiar with the questions and the types of competitions,” Guimarães said. “We are very fortunate to have Dr. Denzer helping us in that regard. The performance of a team lies in its diversity, each individual brings a unique background in food science, and the ability to work in a group and the team “We’ve done a great job.” Now we have to practice to play against the other top seven teams in the country in the Louisiana regional tournament. ”
“Competing in the University Bowl not only allows me to explore topics that may not be covered in a typical degree plan, but it also allows me to expand my connections within the food science industry as a whole,” Frisbie said.
The varsity team won the region with a 28-10 head-to-head victory over Louisiana State University in the first round. Texas A&M University is 14-8 in the second round. Texas A&M won 28-4 in the final.
“Participating in College Bowl was an enriching experience that deepened my knowledge and honed my critical thinking and problem-solving skills across a variety of food science topics,” Chetanjot said. “Through collaboration with my teammates, I learned the importance of teamwork and the power of working together toward a common goal.”
The competition is double-elimination, with each round consisting of 20 questions. Every fifth question is a bonus question and all remaining questions are considered toss-up questions. The team that answers the toss-up question correctly before the next bonus question gets the chance to win the only bonus for that team. Bonus questions are completed and answered as a team led by his captain.
Toss-up questions must be answered within 5 seconds and bonus questions must be answered within 15 seconds. Each round ends when the fourth and final bonus question is completed. This means that if neither team answers correctly before the bonus, the round can exceed his 20 questions.
Question types span all areas of food science, including food chemistry, sensory science, food engineering/processing, nutrition, and culinary science, as well as questions about the sponsoring organization, the Institute of Food Technologists.
“The University of Arkansas has had success in college bowls at both the regional and national levels,” Denzer said. “It’s exciting to have a team this year and be able to compete competitively for the first time as a program in several years. This team is dedicated to preparation and has the breadth of knowledge to be competitive at the national level.” ”
The IFTSA College Bowl competition is divided into eight regions. The team has his four competitive members (two graduate students, two undergraduates) and an alternate who can take turns after each round.
