MADISON (WKOW) — As Wisconsin families prepare grilled meals and take part in holiday festivities this Memorial Day, rising food prices could be a big hit to the wallet for those planning a barbecue.
Across the country, inflation is driving up food prices, and recent reports indicate that while inflation has declined since June 2022, it remains above the Federal Reserve’s target rate of 2%.
In Wisconsin, families spend about 8 percent of their income on groceries, and Abby Hannam said she feels the financial strain.
“It’s definitely increasing and we’re trying to shop locally as much as possible,” Hannam said. “I think it’s putting a strain on everyone.”
The national average price for a pound of raw ground beef is up about 31 cents since last year, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average cost of a Memorial Day barbecue has increased 10 percent since 2023.
Cody Chasteen is planning to invite friends over for a barbecue, but has decided not to buy certain ingredients because they’re too expensive.
“I’m going to make kebabs. I’m going to have some pre-marinated chicken breasts and onions and peppers, and I’m going to make guacamole. I was going to make queso, but it’s really expensive,” Chasteen said. “If I make the same amount as usual, it’ll cost me about $24.”
