The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced in an enforcement notice that Charles Boghini Co. has recalled four products, including some soft drinks, because they contained an undeclared preservative.
According to an FDA notice, the beverage distributor’s products were recalled for failing to disclose several chemicals and preservatives, including dyes that have been linked to cancer.
The maker of the concentrated beverage issued the recall voluntarily and declined to comment further.
The FDA requires companies to disclose the dyes, preservatives and other chemicals they use to make their products to avoid fines and recalls.
Where was it sold?
The Charles Boggini Company distributes beverage products, from beverage flavors and concentrates to water-compatible CBD nanoemulsions, to restaurants across the United States.
The company typically sells 1-gallon and 5-gallon quantities to food establishments in the following states:
Connecticut Pennsylvania New York New Jersey Arizona Michigan Illinois California
What beverage products have been recalled?
The company has recalled four products, including:
Pink Lemonade Yellow Lemonade Yellow Lemonade X Drink Cola Flavor Base
What is the concern about chemicals?
Charles Boghini recalled its Pink Lemonade because it contained undeclared FD&C Red No. 40, a red dye for food, drugs, and cosmetics that has been linked to colon cancer.
The soda company’s Yellow Lemonade and Yellow Lemonade X contained FD&C Yellow No. 5, which is known to cause allergic reactions in some people.
Meanwhile, the Connecticut-based company’s cola flavor base was also found to contain sulfites, a common preservative that can cause respiratory illnesses and other problems if consumed in large quantities.
