The family of a food delivery driver who was shot and killed in Opalocka earlier this month said they want justice.
Alejandro Linares had just moved to South Florida from Venezuela, and less than a week later, his family said, he was killed at work.
Speaking on a Zoom call from Spain, his brothers described him as a good father and son.
“It’s very hard to lose someone you love when they’ve worked so hard for them,” the brothers said. “You think something like this doesn’t happen to a human being, you know? It happens because of a crazy person who has a life of their own that kills innocent people, you know?”
Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting and death of a food delivery driver in Opalocka earlier this month, NBC6’s Kim Winn reports.
Detectives say Linares was delivering food to an apartment in Opalocka on June 8 when he was approached by Dawayen Bendross, who shot him and fled. Police found the 22-year-old shooting suspect on Monday after receiving a call about a person at the scene matching the description of the murder suspect.
According to an arrest warrant, Bendroth had a gun that matched shell casings found at the murder scene. Detectives also reviewed surveillance footage, and a witness identified Bendroth from a police flyer, according to the report.
“All we want is justice, OK?” Linares’ brother said. “We want justice because what happened to my brother could happen to someone else.”
In court, the suspect’s mother told the judge her son suffers from mental illness.
“He is on medication and has already been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other illnesses so he needs to be examined and institutionalised,” the suspect’s mother said.
Bendroth has been charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court again Thursday morning.
A GoFundMe has been set up for funeral expenses.
