The final thrill for European football’s number two institution came as Atalanta and Leverkusen faced off in the UEFA Europa League final.
Atalanta won the match 3-0 and lifted the cup. The winning goals came in the 12th, 26th and 75th minutes, scored by Ademola Lookman.
For the first time in Atalanta’s history
Atalanta, the Italian team whose best European results were a Champions League and a UEFA Europa League quarter-final, have won a European competition for the first time in their history.
However, Atalanta will still be in the Champions League next season.
They have had the most successful 51-game series in their history.
Bayer Leverkusen were unbeaten in 51 official matches this season – Atalanta ended the streak.
Leverkusen became the first team to win the Bundesliga without losing a single game and will end their season on Saturday against Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.
