Elk Grove Township is pleased to announce that a recent community-led effort to help local families in need has been an incredible success. The Township has seen a dramatic increase in the number of residents using its food pantry, now serving over 1,000 families each month, a testament to the growing demand and generosity of our community.
Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, the #StampOutHunger food drive is now known as the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Residents were encouraged to place bags of desired items, such as dry goods, canned goods and other non-perishable foods, by their mailboxes, and postal carriers did the rest. The effort collected an astounding 6,185 pounds of food, which was donated to food pantries.
Elk Grove’s Community Character Coalition (CCC) held another successful food drive focusing on essentials such as soup, peanut butter, jam/jelly and canned chicken on May 18. The event was one of two food drives held annually by the CCC, with all proceeds going directly to the town’s food pantry.
Additionally, dentist Dr. Brian Homan offered to match $1,000 on top of any donations raised during the fundraiser. Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the community, a total of 1,112 pounds of food was collected and donated.
“The town is extremely grateful to the local residents and organizations who have faithfully supported the food pantry as the needs of our community continue to grow,” said Elk Grove Township Supervisor George Busse. “The needs of our community continue to grow and we are proud of the support of our community in helping us meet that need.”
With gardening season in full swing, the Elk Grove Township Food Pantry is calling on all local gardeners who have excess fruits and vegetables. Families who rely on the food pantry are in desperate need of fresh produce and donations are greatly appreciated. Gardeners with more produce than they can consume or distribute are encouraged to donate the excess. With so many families in need, nothing goes to waste.
The Town accepts donations Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 4pm and Tuesday from 9am to 7pm. We also accept packages via Amazon, FedEx and USPS. Please include your name and address on the package to receive a thank you note. For individuals or groups wishing to donate larger amounts, the Town can set up a convenient pick-up time.
Monetary donations are also welcome and accepted to make up the difference between donated items and items in high demand. Checks should be made out to “Elk Grove Township Food Pantry” and delivered or mailed to the County Office at 600 Landmeier Road, Elk Grove Village, Illinois, 60007.
