EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Museum of History (EPMH) is inviting area residents to celebrate Pride Month with events throughout the month of June.
According to a news release from the City of El Paso, EPMH will host a family day, pop-up exhibits and Pride Month conversations.
According to the city, the Family Day event will take place on Saturday, June 1 from 1pm to 4pm and will celebrate LGBTQ Mexican artists, changemakers and cultural bearers as part of the pop-up exhibition “El Baile De Los 41.”
According to EPMH, there will be hands-on activities for all ages, face painting and more.
According to the city, “El Baile de los 41,” or “The Dance of the 41,” is a pop-up exhibition focusing on the social scandals of Mexico’s Porfiria era.
On November 17, 1901, Mexican police raided a secret ball attended only by men. According to the city, the dance raided by police included 42 unaccompanied men, some of whom were wearing women’s clothing.
According to the EPHM, the victims included prominent politicians such as Ignacio de la Torre y Miel, son-in-law of then-President Porfirio Díaz, and Antonio Adalido, godson of Emperor Maximilian I and Queen Carlota of Mexico.
The exhibition will run from Saturday, June 1st to Sunday, June 30th.
EPHM will also host a Pride Month conversation on Thursday, June 13 at 5:30 p.m.
The event will cover a variety of topics including medical, legal, emotional and social support for the community.
According to EPHM, the panel will include experts from Project Vida, the 383rd District Court, the Borderland Rainbow Center and more.
