Elon Musk has come a long way since his days as CEO of PayPal, and so have his hairstyles.
Dr. Jeffrey Epstein, a hair transplant specialist in New York and Miami who has not treated Musk, 47, said it was “highly likely” the billionaire tech mogul had a hair transplant.
“If you look at the photos from his time at PayPal, when he sold the company, [in 2002]”He was pretty bald,” Epstein told Page Six, “I mean, he had a class three to class four hair loss pattern out of seven, and now he doesn’t have any signs of hair loss, at least not on the front of his head.”
Experts described The Boring Company founder’s early 2000s hairstyle as “significant thinning and receding in the front,” or “Prince William-esque,” meaning a moderately receding hairline and fine, young hair covering the front third of the scalp.
Epstein said Musk was a perfect candidate for a hair transplant: “The hair on the back and sides of his head is in good condition and will be used for the transplant,” adding that transplanting hair from the back and sides to the front half of the scalp, as Musk does, will produce the fullest, most natural results.
Epstein said older hair transplant procedures, like the one Musk may have had, were uncomfortable but not particularly painful. He said most patients are fully prepared within six to eight days, but the transplanted hair can fall out after surgery and take up to six months to fully grow back.
The surgery is also expensive: a single procedure can cost anywhere between $8,000 and $15,000. Epstein said Musk has had at least two surgeries, costing him a total of $20,000 to $30,000 (which is pocket change for the 54th richest man on the planet).
Epstein added that Musk’s surgery had “good results.” “At first glance, you wouldn’t know it had been done,” he said. “But when you’re in this industry, you know what to look for.”
