Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said the tourism calendar was a major step towards developing the tourism industry in the district.
After releasing the calendar at a programme organised by the Coastal Karnataka Tourism Development Council on Friday, Rao pointed out that the calendar details various events that will be held throughout the year. He said the tourism sector in the region has huge potential to rival that of Kerala and Goa.
The minister noted that the sector will grow if security is maintained and said the government is fully committed to supporting the development of the sector in the region, adding that the government is also open to private investment in the sector.
Launching the Congress website, Congress leader Brijesh Chowta said the website would help develop the tourism sector in the district by showcasing the rich culture and traditions of the region. He will work hard to get central government support for developing tourist destinations in the district.
Deputy Governor Mullay Muhiran said the council and the district administration are committed to developing tourism. The council is made up of representatives from government, local businesses, tourism experts and other people with experience in various fields.
Muhiran noted that the region’s natural beauty and cultural and traditional heritage will be integrated with tourism. The events calendar will include information on various festivals and fairs, cultural, adventure, environmental and religious tourism.
MLC Ivan D’Souza, Deputy Director Tourism Manikya and Municipal Councillor Gaurav Hegde were among those present.
