Detroit, Michigan has done it again: It makes sense that one of America’s most predominantly black cities would be home to the nation’s first black-led sports radio station.
AM 1270 Sports Rap Radio launched in the Motor City on June 4, and not only are all of the hosts black, but the station itself is black-owned, Blavity reports.
“[This is] “This is historic,” former Detroit sportscaster Rob Parker said, according to CBS News.[It’s] Breakthrough, [and] We just believe the time has come.”
In addition to Parker, who is committed to bringing this vision to fruition, the history-making co-ownership team also includes Parker’s longtime friend Dave Kenny, athlete and former NBA player B.J. Armstrong and University of Michigan wide receiver Maurice “Mo” Weisz.
“Mo was the missing piece. We needed someone young, smart and from the city,” Parker told the outlet.
The two have kept in touch since they first met when Wayes was a football star at Detroit Country Day School.
Weisz’s NFL dreams were ended four years ago due to an injury, but now, thanks to Sports Rap Radio, he’s able to return to the sport he loves by doing commentary on the show.
“Life has surprising ways of showing us signs, sowing seeds, and coming full circle,” Weisz says. “So, [I’m] I’m very humbled, very grateful and ready to get to work.”
An all-local lineup is currently available Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm, with some local programming available on weekends.
“Just four years ago, there were no full-time black sports hosts on Detroit radio,” Parker revealed. “In a city that is nearly 80 percent black, I saw that as a problem.”
