Have you ever heated up cup noodles in the microwave?
The classic on-the-go noodle brand has been a staple in homes and college dorms since it was launched in the U.S. in 1973. (After all, we can’t all eat homemade Classic Baked Mac and Cheese.) Known for its cost-effectiveness, taste, and convenience, Cup Noodles has helped families in times of need, even through decades of inflation.
Cup Noodles, manufactured by Nissin Foods USA, have always been sold in polystyrene cups with strict instructions to boil water before adding the noodles. Wait three minutes for the noodles to cook in boiling water, and they’re ready to slurp. The lid also says “Do not microwave.” But a Today poll found that half of Americans don’t agree.
In a recent announcement, President and CEO Michael Price said Cup Noodles plans to launch a new, environmentally friendly paper cup design in 2024, a historic change for the brand. With the introduction of paper, the new cups will also be microwaveable.

“Cup Noodles continues to explore ways to evolve the brand to meet the current needs of consumers, the environment and the world, while maintaining the same satisfying taste and iconic look that it has always had,” Price said. “This new packaging and new paper cup marks an important milestone for Cup Noodles and an important step in our environmental efforts.”
Not only does the new Cup Noodles design further meet customer demand for microwaved noodles, but in line with Nissin Foods’ sustainability efforts, it is made from 40% recycled fibers, the sleeve is made from 100% recycled paper and contains no plastic. What’s more, heating Cup Noodles directly in the microwave reduces cooking time by approximately 40 seconds, bringing you even closer to the delicious taste of Cup Noodles for a quick lunch.
If you want to turn your cup noodles into a flavorful, quick dinner, try adding slow-cooked pork and ginger for a pork noodle bowl, or add some bright veggie crunch with a chicken noodle bowl with peanut-ginger sauce.
