The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein, which opened today at North Carolina State University, is a major initiative funded by a $30 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund. The center aims to create a biomanufacturing hub for food proteins that are environmentally friendly, healthy, delicious and affordable. The center will work with academic and industry partners to research, develop and commercialize new technologies, train the emerging industry workforce and understand consumer protein preferences.
Founded by Stephanie Michelsen, Gelatec is focused on producing functional natural collagen without relying on animals. The company’s recent achievements include the development of full-length, triple-helical, bioidentical, functional human collagen from a proprietary cell line. This advancement marks a milestone in sustainable collagen production, providing a high-quality alternative to animal-derived collagen.
