In a statement on his social media account, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that as a result of the activities of the Istanbul Provincial Police Organized Crime Department, 33 members of the organized crime group led by Volkan Rekber had gone on the rampage. They were abroad but were caught up in operations that took place in Istanbul and Izmir.
Elikaya said the suspects were determined to have committed 25 separate criminal acts, including establishing a criminal organisation, intentional murder, intentional attempted murder, intentional injury, armed attack on a workplace, violation of Law No. 6136 and intentional endangerment of the civilian population. He said the operation resulted in the seizure of 34 unlicensed handguns, one AK-47 Kalashnikov long-barrel rifle, one ballistic vest and one automatic rifle.
Yerikaya said in a statement:
“Those who resort to criminal tyranny, who disturb the public peace, organised crime gangs and gangsters will fall into the hole they have dug. We are determined to destroy organised crime gangs of all sizes and bring them to justice. I congratulate our victory and the heroic police officers who carried out the operation.”
