A 9News investigation has revealed that John Paul Gaudreau has a lengthy arrest record dating back to 2006.
BOULDER, Colo. — The same suspect who shot and killed two people in Boulder, one last week and another on Wednesday, pleaded guilty last year to a bizarre series of crimes in 2021 in which he brandished a machete.
Suspect John Paul Gaudreau, 35, is being held in the Boulder County Jail on charges including two counts of attempted murder.
Police arrested Gaudreau just before noon Wednesday after investigating the shooting death of a man earlier that day. According to a Boulder police press release, investigators “followed several leads” and determined that Gaudreau was involved in the shooting death of another man on June 28 near the 1600 block of 28th Street.
In 2021, Boulder police said a man found Gaudreau hiding in some bushes and that Gaudreau threatened him with a machete. Hours later, Gaudreau threatened two people with the same machete after burglarizing a home, police said.
A spokesperson for the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office told 9NEWS Investigates that Gaudreau was “accepted into and sentenced by Adult Comprehensive Treatment Court” after pleading guilty to two crimes.
“This is a highly intensive program and the defendant appears to have responded well over the long term. The defendant complied with probation and court supervision, including submitting to drug testing and active monitoring, and appeared in court as required,” the district attorney’s office said in a written statement.
However, in May of this year, Boulder police arrested Gaudreau on misdemeanor property damage and harassment charges. Court records state, “The defendant was released on a $1,000 personal bond.”
He was scheduled to appear again in court July 25 for arraignment in that case.
Gaudreau was scheduled to make his first court appearance in the attempted murder case Friday afternoon.
According to court records, Gaudreau’s criminal history dates back to 2006. In 2021, he had “36 prior arrests” for the following offenses:
Felony intimidation, menacing, third-degree assault, domestic violence, robbery, identity theft, fleeing, drug possession
