China said it “strongly opposes” Turkey’s decision to impose an additional 40 percent tariff on all internal combustion or hybrid vehicles made in China, but called on Ankara to “immediately revoke” it.
A statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce said Chinese authorities considered the measures “discriminatory against Chinese products and in violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules” and had “filed numerous protests with Turkey.”
The statement warned:
“The imposition of these additional tariffs will not only harm our partners and Turkish consumers, but will also increase Chinese companies’ concerns about Turkey’s business environment and undermine their confidence in investing in the country.”
China’s Ministry of Commerce called on the Turkish government to “immediately withdraw discriminatory tariff measures” and “cooperate to promote the healthy development of bilateral economic and trade relations.”
The agency also warned that it would “take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights of enterprises and ensure justice in international trade.”
Turkey’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement last week that the tariffs, which take effect on July 8, are aimed at increasing the participation of locally produced vehicles in the Turkish market and protecting investments in the sector.
