In 1992, the Chicago Bulls won their second consecutive championship, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers 97-93 in Game 6. Michael Jordan was named MVP for the second consecutive year.

1934 – Max Baer stops Primo Carnera in 11 rounds in New York to win the world heavyweight title.
1952 – Jim Peters sets the marathon world record (2:20:42.2).
1952 – Julius Boros shoots 281 at Northwood Club in Dallas to win the U.S. Open, beating Ed Oliver by four strokes.
1958 – Tommy Bolt wins the U.S. Open, beating Gary Player by four strokes.
1958 – Great Britain beat the United States 4–3 at Wimbledon to win the Reitman Cup, Britain’s first title since 1930.
1981 – Donna Caponi Young wins the LPGA Championship by one stroke over Jerilyn Blitz and Pat Myers.
1987 – The Los Angeles Lakers win their 10th NBA championship with a 106-93 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 6 at the Forum.
1990 – Vinnie Johnson scores 15 points in the fourth quarter, sinking a 15-foot shot with 1:7 of a second left to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 92-90 victory and the NBA title in five games over Portland.
1991 – At the U.S. Championships in New York, Leroy Burrell sets a world record in the 100 meters with a time of 9.90 seconds. Carl Lewis, who had held the record of 9.92 seconds since the 1988 Olympics, finished second.
1994 – The New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in Game 7 to win their first Stanley Cup in 54 years. MVP Brian Leetch, Adam Graves and Mark Messier scored goals and New York’s Mike Richter made 28 saves.
1995 – The Houston Rockets achieve the most unlikely feat of all: winning back-to-back NBA championships, defeating the Orlando Magic 113-101. MVP Hakeem Olajuwon finished with 35 points and 15 rebounds.
1998 – Michael Jordan steals the ball from Karl Malone and hits a jump shot with 5.2 seconds left to score 45 points and lead Chicago to an 87-86 victory and a 4-2 series victory over Utah to win his sixth NBA title.
2005 – Asafa Powell breaks the 100 metres world record with a time of 9.77 seconds at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. Powell beat Tim Montgomery’s previous record of 9.78 seconds set in Paris in 2002 by one hundredth of a second. The record was later vacated due to doping allegations.
2005 – Michelle Wie becomes the first woman to qualify for the United States Golf Association Adult Men’s Championship by tying for first place at the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Public Links Regional Qualifying Tournament in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania.
2007 — The San Antonio Spurs, promoted from the ABA in 1976, join the ranks of the NBA’s greatest franchises by defeating Cleveland, 83-82. With their fourth championship since 1999, the Spurs become the only teams in NBA history to win four championships, joining the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls.
2009 – The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99–86 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to win their 15th championship. MVP Kobe Bryant scored 30 points to win his fourth championship and the first without Shaquille O’Neal. It was head coach Phil Jackson’s 10th championship, passing Boston’s Red Auerbach for the most wins of all time.
2015 – Park Inbee shot 68 in the final round to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship for the third consecutive year at 19 under par and return to the top of the women’s golf rankings. The South Korean finished five strokes ahead of 22-year-old compatriot Kim Se-young in the second major of the season.
