Alexandria, Virginia – Popular Juneteenth Events
June 15-16, 2024: Manumission Tour Company will offer a Juneteenth African American History Bus Tour. Visit historic sites that tell the story of African Americans in early Alexandria, including the city’s historic African American Church. June 19, 2024: Carlisle House, a historic mansion museum and park, will host its annual Juneteenth Celebration in collaboration with local arts organization The Athenaeum. Learn about the history of Juneteenth through hands-on activities, art, history and poetry readings. Washington Rivers’ Jubilee Voices’ lively and interactive concert features traditional music, dance and spoken word and will be the centerpiece of Juneteenth holiday festivities in Market Square. History Museum
Alexandria Black History Museum (open June 19 from 11am to 5pm): The Alexandria Black History Museum will feature exhibits such as “Preserving Their Names: The Black Lives Remembered Collection,” showcasing digital images and artifacts donated by the Washington, DC-area community in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. A children’s area offers thought-provoking, age-appropriate activities for younger visitors. Plus, the Moss Kendricks Collection, opening this summer, highlights the Washington, DC-based marketing pioneer who revolutionized the portrayal of African Americans in the media in the mid-20th century.

Freedom House Museum (open June 19 from 11am to 5pm): This national historic landmark features three exhibits highlighting the history of black people in Alexandria and the black experience in America. Learn about the experiences of slaves and free black people who lived in and were trafficked through Alexandria, as well as the story of the civil rights movement.
