DETROIT – The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations is educating travelers preparing for the Hajj pilgrimage with important travel tips to ensure a smooth return to the United States. We urge you to be careful.
Travelers should familiarize themselves with the regulations regarding traveling with currency exceeding $10,000 and be prepared to declare any food or merchandise they bring back into the United States.
“Travelers are required to declare any currency value over $10,000 to CBP when entering or leaving the United States,” said Christopher Perry, director of field operations. “Furthermore, it is important that travelers are honest and upfront about their purchases abroad and be able to provide accurate proof of the items they have and the amount of money they are bringing on their trip.”
All travelers entering the United States must declare the meat, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, animals, and plant and animal products (including soup or soup products) they may bring into the United States. Certain items brought into the United States from foreign countries are restricted according to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations. Prohibited agricultural products may harbor plant pests and foreign animal diseases that can cause serious damage to American crops, livestock, the environment, and a large part of our national economy.
Failure to accurately declare currency, food, and merchandise may be subject to seizure and may result in civil and criminal penalties.
Travelers can save time and easily fill out currency and financial instrument reports online up to 72 hours before their scheduled travel date.
If a traveler has concerns as a result of testing at a port of entry, a CBP supervisor is available to answer questions and address concerns. As always, CBP is committed to treating all travelers, including those returning from Hajj, with respect and dignity.
