Congress members condemned the incident in initial statements on their social media accounts.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he was “praying for President Trump” after former President Trump was whisked off the podium at a rally following a gunshot-like explosion.
House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to former President Trump. We thank law enforcement for their decisive response. The United States is a democracy. We can never tolerate political violence of any kind.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also condemned the attack on Trump at the rally as political violence.
“While I am horrified by what happened at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania, I am relieved that former President Trump is safe. There is no place for political violence in our country,” Schumer said in his assessment.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also shared a post about her and he had his say.
Pelosi said she waited for “further details about this horrific incident” and called for prayers that those who attended the former president’s rally would not come to harm.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg wrote on his social media account, “In these frightening times, I am encouraged to hear indications from President Trump’s team that the former president is well. Today, all Americans must speak with one voice to completely and unequivocally reject all political violence,” along with sharing his facial expression.
