My parents are both Greek and took me to Greece every summer to learn about my roots. Thessaloniki is a mainland city with great food, beautiful history and great nightlife. Islands like Corfu and Rhodes have amazing beaches that aren’t as touristy.

As a child, I spent almost every summer in Greece with my family.
My parents immigrated to California from Greece in the 1980s and made sure I learned about their family roots as I was growing up. As a child, we spent almost every summer in Greece, where our beach days were filled with perfect turquoise Aegean Water and big bowls of fresh horiatiki.
Now my friends frequently ask me for travel advice for Greece, and the only places they want to visit are Mykonos, Santorini, and Athens, and my answer to them is always the same: you can experience much of Greece’s great food, culture, and beaches without having to venture into the crowded tourist areas.
