Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson will be looking to make history on more than one front when he takes part in the Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas, later this month.
Henderson confirmed he will take part in All-Star Week’s signature event, which will be held Sunday night as part of ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.”
According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Gunnar Henderson will be competing in the Derby!!!!!
– He became the youngest ever HR Derby winner (23 years and 16 days old on Derby day; the current youngest winner is Juan Gonzalez in 1993 at 23 years and 265 days old).
– The Orioles have won twice: 1991 with Cal Ripken Jr. and 2004 with Miguel Tejada.
These two are also winning shortstops in baseball.

Henderson certainly has the talent to win this tournament, after a stellar first half of the season with Baltimore, batting .288 with 26 homers, 58 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. He’s been the driving force behind the Orioles’ offense this year, when Jackson Holiday was supposed to dominate the Baltimore Giants. He’s posted a .988 OPS and is the main reason the Orioles are tied with the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
The All-Star team won 101 games last season and is aiming for a second consecutive division title.
Baltimore has an off day on Monday. The baseball schedule is very light with three games before traveling to Seattle for a series that starts Tuesday night against the Mariners, who lead the AL West by 3.5 games but have lost eight of their last 12 games.
