San Juan County’s criminal history dates back to 2003.
An Aztec man with a lengthy criminal history was arrested after breaking into a home and stealing the man’s dirt bike, police said.
Seraphine Shawns Carter, 39, was indicted on charges of second-degree felony robbery with a deadly weapon, third-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fourth-degree felony possession of a handgun and fourth-degree felony violation of probation.
The charges are in connection to an armed robbery that occurred in the 1000 block of McKinley Lane in Bloomfield, where Carter reportedly broke into a home owned by Rene Alicia, who he knew from a long time ago, according to the criminal complaint.
According to the criminal complaint, Bloomfield police responded to the home at 10:34 a.m. on June 20 and found the living room “disarrayed,” Alicia’s right cheek “swollen and bruised,” and blood on her face and clothes that appeared to indicate she had been “pistol-whipped” by Carter.
Alicia told police she was sitting in the living room of her home when Carter “pried open” the door, causing it to come off the doorframe, then struggled with her, “threw her to the ground” and struck her with a handgun, the complaint states.
Alicia told police that after seeing the gun, she “didn’t move because she was afraid she would be shot,” while Carter took a “green and white Yamaha dirt bike” from the home, loaded it into a red pickup truck and fled, the complaint states.
Police arrested Carter. Court records show Carter has a lengthy criminal history in San Juan County dating back to 2003. His past criminal history includes drug charges, aggravated assault and aggravated burglary. Carter’s competency was questioned in a 2023 aggravated burglary case, but he was found competent to stand trial. However, the case did not proceed, according to court records.
Carter was charged with criminal trespass in 2023. He pleaded not guilty and was sentenced to 18 months probation.
Carter is being held in custody on the new case and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 27 in Aztec Magistrate Court.
