These images show the two impact regions of the remnant SNR 1181. The bright white in the center is a white dwarf star. Credit: 2024 T. Ko, H. Suzuki, K. Kashiyama et al. / The Astrophysical Journal For the first time, the mysterious remains of a rare type of supernova recorded in 1181 have been uncovered. Two white dwarf stars collided to create a temporary “guest star,” now called Supernova (SN) 1181, which has been recorded in historical documents in Japan and other parts of Asia. However, after the star dimmed, its location and structure remained a mystery, until a…
For 16 years, Partners in Food Solutions has been connecting volunteers from U.S. companies with African businesses to improve food systems on the continent. A Minnesota-based nonprofit founded by General Mills will tap the expertise of African business leaders to increase its impact and broaden its reach. Mandla Nkomo took over as CEO on Monday with a mission to “create more opportunity.” “It’s really interesting to see the potential this organization still has,” Nkomo said in a recent interview from South Africa, where he’s based. “We’ve worked with over 2,000 African entrepreneurs and impacted millions of smallholder farmers, but the…
What do a whaling captain, an art dealer and the grandson of a “prominent British family” have in common? They all once lived on the property now known as 288 Russell’s Mills Road. The big white historic home, with a cupola that overlooks the water directly, has become something of a town landmark, but Seathrift was not the first home built on the property, said Annabelle Persson, granddaughter of current owner Bengt Persson. During a presentation organized by the Dartmouth Society for History and Art, Parson traced the land’s history back to 1700, when it was first developed by Ralph…
Let’s say for the sake of argument that you don’t love Cool Hand Luke as much as I do, and you probably still know many of the film’s oft-quoted lines, such as the line in the second act where Luke brags about being able to eat 50 eggs. “Why do I have to eat 50 eggs?” asks fellow gangster Dragline, played by George Kennedy in his slow, Oscar-winning drawl. “Why not 35 or 39?” “I thought it was a nice round number,” Paul Newman’s Luke replies. Fractions are best. They’re easy to remember and easy to calculate. But Dragline wasn’t…

We have written many times over the years about the “Trumpization” of the Senate Republican Conference and the general decline of deal-brokering centrists in the Senate. The past few elections have seen the departure of several veteran Republican senators and their replacement by Republicans closer to former President Donald Trump, as well as the retirement of senators from both parties who played key roles in some of the most high-profile bipartisan deals of the past decade. Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah) is trying to buck this trend. Curtis is this year’s Republican nominee to replace retiring Sen. Mitt Romney, a Republican…
Board chair orders: MPs’ admission to Bogazici University in crisis “It’s illegal to block us.” When lawmakers asked to enter, security forces stood arm-in-arm and blocked their entry. The lawmakers said the university was a public institution and that the blockage was illegal. “We came for the right to be audited.” Reacting to what happened, CHP Izmir’s Deputy Prime Minister Yuksel Tashkin said, “I am here as a deputy on an inspection mission.
