According to CNN, the Danish Prime Minister’s Office announced that Prime Minister Frederiksen was attacked by an assailant in Kurtorvetsplein in Copenhagen.
The statement said the attacker had been detained.
The statement said Frederiksen was shocked by the attack but did not say how the suspect carried out the attack or whether the prime minister was injured.
EU officials condemn the attack
European Union officials condemned the attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in the capital, Copenhagen, and shared messages of support.
EU Council President Charles Michel expressed his outrage over the attack on Frederiksen in an X-post, saying, “I strongly condemn this despicable attack. All my thoughts are with you and your family, dear Mette. I hope that you will get over this terrible attack as soon as possible.” He shared the message.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a social media post that she was “shocked” by the attack and “condemns this despicable act that goes against everything we believe in and fight for in Europe. I wish you all strength and courage, you have both in abundance,” he said.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in a post on her X account that the attack was “horrifying”, adding: “Violence has no place in politics. Stay strong, Mette!” she said.
