GCM Staff Report
Baldwin County received federal funding provided through the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board program.
In Phase 41, Baldwin County will receive $2,903 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a national committee chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and comprised of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in America, Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army, and United Way Worldwide. Local committees were tasked with distributing the funds appropriated by Congress to expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in areas of high need across the country.
A local committee made up of public sector representatives, private organization representatives, and homeless representatives will determine how the funds provided to Baldwin County will be distributed to emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. The local committee will be responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds as well as any additional funds that will be made available during this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies selected to receive funds must 1) be a private, volunteer nonprofit organization or a government agency, 2) be eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) not discriminate, 5) have the capacity to provide emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) in the case of a private, volunteer organization, have a volunteer board. Qualified agencies are encouraged to apply.
Public or private volunteer organizations interested in applying for emergency food and shelter program funds should contact Lana Mummah at United Way of Baldwin County, PO Box 244, Foley, AL 36536, (251) 943-2110 for an application.
