The indictment prepared against Menendez, chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he used his “political influence” to assist several New Jersey businessmen and the Egyptian government in receiving cash, gold bars, work payments and luxury cars as bribes, most of which were hidden in his clothes and cabinets, as well as 13 gold bars.

In a letter to then-Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo in 2016, Menendez claimed that Turkey was acting aggressively against Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration in Southern Cyprus and called for the imposition of sanctions on Turkey for its presence in the eastern Mediterranean.
