Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese made WNBA history by recording a double-double in seven consecutive games, the longest streak by a rookie in the league.
The former Louisiana State University star set the record in an 83-72 home win over the Dallas Wings on Thursday. Reese finished with 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.
In basketball, a double-double refers to a player scoring in double figures in at least two of the five major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots.
“It’s nice to finally get a win at home,” Reese said on the ESPN broadcast after the game. “Obviously, it’s super exciting for me too. I try to be nice to myself and say I’m doing a good job, but I still have a lot to improve on. I’m excited to be in this league and I’m happy to win some more games.”
According to CBS Sports, Reese surpassed the record of six consecutive double-doubles set by Tina Charles in 2010 and Cindy Brown in 1998. Charles holds the rookie season record with 22 double-doubles.
Reese has eight double-doubles this year and still has a chance to match that mark with 26 games remaining. She is averaging 12.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
When asked about her accomplishments in her postgame press conference, Reese cited other strong rookies who came before her, including fellow Louisiana State alumna Sylvia Fowles, the WNBA’s all-time record for double-doubles (193), who called Reese “Miss Double-Double Queen” when she was still in college.
“I love Sylvia. She was a great person to me and a great mentor when I was at Louisiana State University,” Reese said. “I know she would be very proud of me.”
Her historic success comes ahead of a highly anticipated rematch between Chicago and the Indiana Fever, led by another star rookie, Caitlin Clark.
