According to a report conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), Turkiye has emerged as the fifth-highest country in the world for performing the most aesthetic procedures. It also ranks second and third in the world for rhinoplasty and Botox treatments, respectively, contributing to the overall ranking.
Based solely on data collected from plastic surgeons, the report charts trends in the top 10 countries with the highest volume of plastic surgery procedures, revealing how plastic surgery procedures vary by region and how similar the beauty trends sweeping the world may be.
“The most commonly performed surgical and non-surgical procedures in the world in 2020 are breast augmentation, liposuction, blepharoplasty, Botox, hyaluronic acid injections, and hair removal,” said ISAPS Patient Safety Committee member Akun.・Professor Yucel said.
“Since the 2000s, there has been a shift in beauty trends. Starting with Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian, big breasts, small waists, and big hips are trending. The food industry also plays a big role in this change. I’m doing it,” he said.
Yucel attributes the growing popularity of breast augmentation, waist shaping and Brazilian butt lifts (BBL) to this current beauty trend.
“Blepharoplasty is always at the top because it’s relatively inexpensive, relatively easy and both men and women can undergo this procedure,” he added.
Yuchel also said the use of Botox and fillers began to increase after the 2008 economic crisis caused a decline in the number of surgeries.
He said he believes the fact that these processes are easy and cheap to apply is leading to high demand for them.
“Increasing demand has enabled the beauty industry to develop more effective and safe fillers, and fuller lips, high cheekbones and sharper jawlines have created a huge market among young people, especially thanks to influencers and social media,” he added.
“Only about 10 percent of patients are male when it comes to cosmetic surgery, and this percentage has been increasing very slowly over the years. However, the number of male patients undergoing non-surgical procedures is growing rapidly,” Yucel said.
According to Yucel, men do not often undergo cosmetic surgery in Turkiye.
One in four of Turkiye’s plastic surgeons’ patients are foreigners. According to this criterion, Turkiye ranks second in the world after Mexico. Most of the patients come from Germany, England and France.
“Rhinoplasty is top-notch in Turkey, other Mediterranean countries, Israel and Iran,” Yuchel said.
“This is because these countries have larger noses, knobs and larger bones,” he added.
In 2020, more than 10 million people worldwide underwent cosmetic surgery and approximately 14.5 million people underwent non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
Yucel said the 2020 Global Survey showed a slight decrease in the number of surgeries and procedures compared to the previous year.
He attributes this to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown.
“I think that in 2021 we will see a significant increase in the number of cosmetic surgeries and procedures, not just in our country but around the world,” he said.
