If you’ve been near the Bicentennial Tower at Dobbins Landing on Erie’s Bayfront recently, you may have noticed a food truck atop the upper public access area.
Tim Sedney, owner of Hidden Harbor, which operates Bicentennial Tower, along with several other businesses and tourist attractions around Lake Erie, wants more people to visit the tower’s public access areas. That’s what I was thinking.
Sedney and business partner Gary Leavell decided to use a crane to lift the food truck. The new food truck’s name is “Gnarly Knots.”
In addition to sandwiches on pretzel buns, Gnarly Knots also offers baked pretzel knots, beer cheese, chips, macaroni and cheese, and other items. We also plan to offer catering options.
“We wanted something unique, different from all the other restaurant venues,” Sedney said, “so we came up with different kinds of fun pretzel ‘sammiches.’ We have a caricature, surf style theme, and all of the sandwiches served at Gnarly Knott’s are made on pretzel sandwich buns.”
The food truck will be open year-round, with a target launch date for Memorial Day weekend and a full-time opening in June.

Gnarly Knots is stationary on the second floor landing while open during the same hours as the Tower and is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. . In September, the opening hours will change to 10am to 6pm every day, and from October until April, the opening hours will change to 11am to 4pm only on Saturdays and Sundays.
How did food trucks get up there?
Perhaps the main question from passersby is how the mobile kitchen, which weighs more than 6,000 pounds, was raised to a level where vehicles cannot access it.
Bicentennial Tower manager Elise Marshall told the Times-News that the vehicle was lifted by a crane over the left side of the railing.
The food truck was lifted by the J. Thomas Crane Company.
“We hope the addition of Gnarly Knotts food trucks to the Erie region will provide a fun and interesting way to serve our delicious pretzel sandwiches,” Sedney said. “Whether you’re on the go, stopping in for lunch or relaxing at Bicentennial Tower while enjoying the views of Presque Isle Bay, Gnarly Knotts is sure to have something for your taste.”
