The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) recently updated its travel advice for Turkey, warning of the terror threat ahead of the summer holiday season when around 1.6 million British holidaymakers are preparing to visit the popular tourist destination, it was reported on Friday.
The FCDO, the government agency responsible for advising British nationals on traveling abroad, has stressed the importance of remaining vigilant while in Turkey. The latest guidance highlights potential concerns and recommends against travel to certain areas due to safety and security risks.
The FCDO travel advisory acknowledges that most visits to Turkey are completed without incident. However, it urges travelers to be aware of political tensions in the country and the potential for violence, particularly after the devastating earthquake earlier this year.
The latest update specifically warns of the “high threat of a global terrorist attack affecting British interests and British people” in Turkey. The report identifies southeastern Turkey, Ankara and Istanbul as the regions where the most terrorist attacks occurred. The advisory notes that terrorists are likely to target locations frequented by tourists, such as public buildings, places of worship, major events and large gatherings.
Given the ongoing conflict near the border with Syria, the FCDO advises against all travel within 10km of the border. The guidance highlights the risk of terrorist groups using kidnapping as a tactic and emphasizes the need to increase vigilance in border areas. It also advises against traveling to Sirnak city and Hakkari province, except for essential cases.
The FCDO’s travel advice aims to provide UK citizens with the latest information and guidance to help them make informed decisions about their travel plans. However, the final decision on whether to travel to Turkey rests with the individual.
Turkey has seen a significant increase in the number of foreign tourists, with an increase of 16.2% year-on-year in May alone. Popular destinations include Antalya, Istanbul, Muğla and Edirne, according to statistics from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
