If you’ve had to throw away food after a power outage, you’re not alone.
We explained how you can recover up to $500 from your insurance company. But what if you don’t have insurance? one viewer asked KPRC 2’s Amy Davis.
“I’m a 78-year-old senior citizen. I used my SNAP CARD to buy 15 days of groceries. I had to throw everything out of the refrigerator. Here in Katy, we had no power. 20 The power doesn’t turn on for hours. I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to get a refund. I don’t have insurance,” said KPRC 2 viewer Fia.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps people buy the food they need to stay healthy. SNAP food benefits are added to your Lone Star Card and can be used like a credit card at any store that accepts SNAP.
You can seek refund of lost benefits
Good news. You may be able to get a refund for lost food. The Texas Department of Health and Human Services said SNAP recipients can apply for reinstatement within 10 days (from the date of loss).
If there is a power outage, it will be on May 27th.
Participants can do this by running 2-1-1. For additional questions, please contact the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at PressOffice@hhs.texas.gov.
If you have insurance, you can claim a refund for your lost groceries and likely receive up to $500. You may also receive a refund for dining out and hotel expenses during this period.
Check your insurance policy to see if you are covered for this. You can also learn more about how to get reimbursed for dining out and hotel stays during a power outage.
