Going on holiday to Europe this summer?
Now that you’ve figured out how to stay cool in the stifling heat, the next thing you should do is avoid crowds.
Of course, it’s great to see some of the world’s most impressive places recover in terms of visitor numbers after the pandemic, but too many tourists often lead to inflated prices and accidental damage and pollution.
Let’s be honest, no one wants to spend their precious annual leave waiting in line or mixing with other travelers.
Thankfully, new research from luxury travel company The Thinking Traveller has ranked Europe’s busiest tourist destinations so you can avoid getting caught up in the crowds.
We analyzed TripAdvisor reviews to find the places with the most mentions of being “crowded” or “busy” and created the list.
And bad news for anyone heading to Scotland: Edinburgh Castle has been named the continent’s busiest tourist attraction.

Nearly two million people are expected to visit the former royal residence in 2023, with around 70% of people holidaying in Edinburgh visiting the castle during their trip.
This may be smaller than attractions like the British Museum and the Tower of London, both of which are 35,737 square metres, but it is less than half the size of either.
Additionally, the Scottish capital experiences huge spikes in tourist numbers at certain times of the year (such as during the Fringe festival), so Edinburgh Castle may get particularly busy depending on when you visit.

Next on the list was Buckingham Palace, followed by Siam Park, a water park in Tenerife.
