Over the past two weeks, there have been multiple recalls of various foods: The CDC released information about how Boar’s Head recalled liverwurst and various deli meats due to possible Listeria contamination.
The liverwurst in question was manufactured between June 11, 2024 and July 17, 2024 and includes both 5-pound chunks and sliced packages with sell-by dates between July 25, 2024 and August 30, 2024. The recall also applies to other deli meats, including Virginia ham, Italian Cuppy Style ham, bologna and beef salami, with sell-by dates of August 10 or August 15, 2024. Look for the “EST. 12612” marking on the product label.
The recall follows the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes in an unopened package of Boar’s Head Liversausage. Listeria contamination can spread through deli meats and cookware and will grow when refrigerated, but is effectively killed by reheating the food to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Further testing is underway to determine if the same strain of Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for the recent illnesses and if other deli meat products are affected.
Consumers are advised to immediately discard or return affected meat products and thoroughly clean refrigerators and any surfaces that may have come into contact with these products.
Additionally, Weird Farm, a Willard, Ohio-based company, announced a voluntary recall of whole and bagged salad cucumbers due to possible Listeria contamination. The recall affects whole and bagged salad cucumbers packaged on June 5 and June 6, 2024. These products were sourced from out of state and processed and distributed by Weird Farm. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered the potential contamination through routine sampling.
Listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis, which can cause symptoms including fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal upset. No illnesses or complaints have been reported, but consumers who experience these symptoms should seek medical attention. The affected products included whole cucumbers (1.5-2.5 inches in diameter and 6-9 inches long) and two-pound bags of salad cucumbers in clear blue-bottom bags distributed to Walmart stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
Consumers are advised to discard affected products. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Wiers Farm at (419) 933-2161 or email customercare@wiersfarm.com. The company is working with regulators to resolve the issue and ensure food safety.
