A judicial and administrative investigation has been launched against firefighters in Ankara following the death of Beren Su Bolat (13), who was trapped in an elevator and fell down the elevator shaft during rescue efforts. It was discovered that the firefighter who was supposed to hold Beren Su as she got out of the elevator was holding a thermos in his hand. A photo of this moment was included in the investigation file.
He lost his life
On Tuesday, Beren Sue Borat visited her classmate’s apartment on Street 4, Febji Çakmak Subdivision, Sinkan District. Beren Sue and her friend were trapped in the elevator between the fifth and sixth floors. During the operation of the fire brigade, which responded to the call, Beren Sue fell down the elevator shaft and lost her life, but her friend was rescued.
In line with the expert report prepared on the death of Beren Su, the Ankara West Prosecutor General has opened a judicial investigation against the firefighters on charges of “negligent homicide”, while the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality has opened an administrative investigation (ABB).

Meanwhile, photos taken during the rescue of Beren Su and her friend were also included in the investigation file. They show Beren Su turning away from the elevator between two floors, while the firefighter who should have picked her up is holding a thermos in one hand. As she got out of the elevator, she fell into the void below.
Statement from the local government
ABB’s written statement read, “Following the death of a 13-year-old girl in a tragic accident that occurred during rescue operations after she was trapped in an elevator of a building in the Febci Çakmak district of Sincan district, on July 23, 2024, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Turkish government announced, “A judicial and administrative investigation has been opened by the relevant authorities of the Metropolitan Municipality against the officials who intervened in the incident. If, as a result of the ongoing legal procedures and investigations, the relevant authorities have determined that the responsibility for this sad incident lies with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, we would like to inform you that they will follow all legal procedures and carry them out with care.”
