No first day of school outfit is complete without a fresh haircut, and GG’s Salon wants to offer free haircuts to students this Saturday. Their support of the community doesn’t stop there, as the salon is also collecting food donations to help stock Computer Dave’s monthly food pantry.
GG owner Steph Boling says with prices continuing to rise, some families can’t afford a back-to-school haircut, so she offers haircuts for as low as a jar of peanut butter or a pack of ramen noodles.
“Instead of spending $25 or $30 on a back-to-school haircut, why not run to Dollar Tree or Walmart or Kroger and buy a $1 can of peanut butter or a $2 pack of ramen noodles and get your haircut,” Bowling said.
Bowling said they won’t turn away anyone who can’t donate to the effort. GG’s is located at 5010 Wildcat Way, Suite 2, right next to Walmart.
Donations received will go to the local Computer Dave’s Donation Pantry, where owner David Fogle makes monthly donations of non-perishable food and other items to the Cadillac Motel, Colonel House, Dixana Court, “Tent City” and other areas.
After seeing the work Fogle’s business was doing, Bowling decided to collect and further his own mission.
“This year we thought it would be nice to do something for them as well, so they could not only help those in need of care but also support another ministry,” Bowling said.
Bowling said her granddaughter will also be donating items to the salon and will be hosting a bake sale.
Bowling said when she pitched the idea to her team, all of her stylists volunteered to help with community activities like checking in and offering cuts. No appointments are needed on Saturdays.
“Our success, the success of my store, is all down to the team that I have behind me,” she said, “and it’s no secret that I have that, so I’m really humbled and grateful and blessed to have such amazing, talented artists that support my vision.”
