Sofia Vergara is the first Latina to be nominated for Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for “Griselda.”
The 2024 Emmy nominations have been announced, and Sofia Vergara has made history. The Modern Family alum is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as drug lord Griselda Blanco in the Netflix limited series Griselda. In addition to the nomination, she actually achieved a pretty big milestone.
According to E! Online, Vergara is the first Latina to be nominated in the category. The category has been around since 1955, so it’s been 69 years since a Latina has had a chance to be nominated, and Vergara is the first woman to achieve that feat. Vergara will be competing against Jodie Foster, Brie Larson, Juno Temple, and Naomi Watts. The competition is expected to be tough this year, and whether Vergara wins or loses, the nominations are already pretty big.
Vergara’s transformation into Blanco was revealed in a new trailer for “Griselda,” released last November, and she looks like a completely different person. “Griselda,” which premiered in January, tells the story of a crime boss and his rise in Miami’s drug world and the pursuit of power and wealth. Blanco’s family sued Vergara, claiming that her name and image were used without permission, but the series was still a huge hit and garnered Vergara a historic nomination.
While this is Sofia Vergara’s first nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, it’s not her first Emmy nomination. She’s been nominated four years in a row for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Gloria Pritchett in Modern Family. While it remains to be seen whether Vergara will ultimately win a well-deserved Emmy, it would surely be great to see her achievements blossom into even bigger successes.
Fans will have to tune in to the 76th Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 15 at 8pm ET on ABC to see if Vergara continues to make history and wins Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or a Movie. In the meantime, Griselda is streaming on Netflix, and it would be the perfect time to tune in to find out why she was worthy of being the first Latina actress to be nominated in the category and why she deserved to win.
