The organization Earthday.org has released a new report on pet exposure to plastic. The “Pets vs. Plastic” report provides more information to pet owners about the risks of plastic exposure from pet toys, pet food, and packaging.
For example, in the section “What is your pet actually chewing?” the report states:
“Polyvinyl chloride is a type of hard plastic commonly referred to as ‘vinyl.’ It’s too hard for dogs to chew and can damage their teeth. That’s why toxic chemicals called phthalates, known as plasticizers, are added to PVC pet toys to make them softer, more flexible and chewy. The problem is, when dogs and cats chew on toys made from this plastic mixture, the phthalates leach out of the toy and can be absorbed through your pet’s gums and skin.”
A representative from Earthday.org interviewed us (TruthaboutPetFood.com) and even purchased the official AAFCO publication that looked into ingredients of concern allowed in pet foods and animal feeds. The Pets VS. Plastics report explores the lack of oversight over pet food/animal food safety when it comes to plastics and other permitted ingredients of concern.
The report also details the risk of exposure to plastics (both BPA and phthalates) from pet food packaging materials.
