GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Located in downtown Glendale on the corner of Glendale Boulevard and 58th Street, Haus Murphy’s serves authentic German cuisine with traditional Bavarian recipes handed down through generations.
“The recipes are at least 100 years old and have been passed down from generation to generation. They’re kept very secret. We have no idea what’s made or how it’s made. It’s totally ‘top secret’ around here,” says Megan Vunjovac, a longtime employee at House Murphy’s.

The menu includes German classics such as giant pretzels with beer cheese spread, bratwurst, sauerbraten, rouladen and apple strudel. The schnitzel is just the right balance of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
If you’re looking for something a little different, try the Sauerkraut Torte, a classic chocolate cake made with sauerkraut (though you won’t taste it).

The only food not made in-house is the traditional German sausages, sourced from a local butcher – everything else is handmade.

The restaurant will celebrate its 28th anniversary this August, and over the last 28 years it has been a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
According to Bunjovac, military personnel are especially fond of the dish: “We have a lot of military men coming in and they say, ‘I just got back from a tour in Germany, and this tastes the most like what I had there.'”
No German restaurant would be complete without a good beer selection, and Haus Murphy’s has a large selection of imported beers, including one specialty beer that’s only available at the Glendale location.
“All our beers are imported from Germany,” Bunjovac says. “One of my favorites is Brewer’s Gold. It’s an amber beer. It’s fantastic. It’s a beer you can only get here. You can’t get it anywhere else. The owner tasted it, loved it and bought up the whole stock.”
House Murphy’s also serves cocktails like the Apple Strudel Margarita and the Black Forest Old Fashioned (left). All beers are imported from Germany, with must-try Warsteiner Oktoberfest and Brewer’s Gold. 32-ounce bottles are available upon request.
If you’re looking to sip on a few pints of Brewer’s Gold or imported beer, Haus Murphy’s Oktoberfest is a festival not to be missed.
The festival takes place on the Fridays and Saturdays of the last three weekends in October, with the restaurant’s indoor and outdoor patios packed with patrons enjoying celebrations, mug-holding contests and live “oompah” bands from Germany.
